Who knew something by Norman Rockwell would go for 22.6 million bucks? I mean, I've heard his name before, but I thought America was kind of over him? What with all the wholesome crap he did? I guess not. Not that I know anything about art or even like art, but still. A painting of Ted Williams and the Boston Red Sox locker room would have been fun to have. Now I'm sad. Anyone know another arty thing I can buy to cheer me up so I can feel like I'm a person who buys arty things?

Well I am not an artist nor do I claim to have their eye but have you been in a museum? A freaking dot is what they call art now and days.

If I say no am I going to get in trouble? Kidding. I have been in museums. It's how I got most of the material I used for teaching history. Thank you, powers!

Okay fine we'll watch the documentary. Happy now?

I'm still not buying a painting with a dot on it unless it's a really pretty dot...

And only if the sun hits it just right you can see a face of some deity or saint?

Or some sort of alcoholic container... Or shoes...

Face of Jesus? My uncle would get a kick out of that one.

TOTALLY! We'll have to keep our eyes peeled for one of those for him!

The Japanese flag is just a dot. Would you say it is not artful?

From: [identity profile] x-adrienne.livejournal.com
Yes I would say it is not artful. Because "an image that invokes powerful emotion from others" is still just a dot to me. A flag and art aren't the same thing to me. Sorry.

But why is that an issue? Can't art be different for everyone? Sorry I don't have powerful emotion about it, but I just don't, and telling me I'm supposed to doesn't mean I'm suddenly granted with that powerful emotion.

By the same token, I can tell you baseball is a religious experience and the greatest sport in the world, but that doesn't mean you'll feel that way about it just because I tell you you should, right? You might not even consider it a sport. Lots of people don't. And what's wrong with that?

Nothing is wrong with people liking different things. But, I do not think it is fair to dismiss something entirely. Baseball is not my personal idea of entertainment but I can recognize it's value to others. You love baseball, so it must have some value, and so if you had a shadowbox on your wall of important baseball items, I would try to appreciate it for the value and emotion it invokes for you.

I don't think anyone's dismissing something entirely, or not recognizing its value to others. At least not intentionally. If you feel your values and emotions are being slighted, I apologize for Tandy and myself. Can I buy you a bottle of wine or something as a peace offering?

Tandy's comment about 'art today' was rather pointed in it is dismissal of pieces - and entire art movements -that can be powerful to other people.

I am not exceptionally upset, just mildly annoyed. It will pass - but I am not going to say no to free wine because that would be silly!

Well, she's a kid. Kids say stupid things sometimes. And I didn't discourage her since it doesn't bother me, so that one's on me. I know she didn't mean to offend anyone by it, though, so, again, sorry you're annoyed. Okay I'll see what I can do on the free wine front.

That "dot" was a moving social commentary on the isolation young girls feel during puberty especially during their first menstruation. Perhaps it was a little obvious, but nonetheless it spoke to a subject which is consistently swept under a rug.

So, what you're saying is... it's not a pretty dot?

Some things just can't be taught. You can teach me geometry and trigonometry, give me rules to follow, but you can't learn how to view a piece of art and see the emotion behind it.

Here, have some early Georgia O'Keefe:

Exxxxxxxxxactly. Art doesn't work like math. Unfortunately.

I would protest on the grounds that I'm not a student anymore and shouldn't have to be punished with learning things, but I suppose the fact I still live in a school renders that point null and void. I like the first two of those. Especially the first one. Very pretty. If I liked dogs (or is it a cow?) I would probably like the third one as well.

It's a cow.

The first one is a starry night on Lake George and the second is Purple Petunias. These are less vibrant than her New Mexico work, for which she is more famous, for many reasons. I totally wrote a kick ass paper on her, so I'm kinda in a mild obsession.

As far as cows go i'm sure it's a really arty and pretty cow?

That seems unfortunate. Isn't a full obsession easier to treat than a mild one? Or does that just work with sprains?

Do not dismiss the power and importance of the impressionist, cubist and abstract art movements - or the pop art movements. Often the artist is making a statement about colour, or the relationship between shape and space.

What is 'just a freaking dot' to you, is an image that invokes powerful emotion from others.

I am not judging. I was given an example.
