Public ones, anyway.

1. Quit smoking. Probably less likely to stick with this one this year than I have been every other year since I started, but I'll take another stab at it.

2. Swim every day.

3. Take some sort of class- I'm thinking tai chi or yoga or something like that. Something to help with meditation. And flexibility.

4. Learn to like cucumbers.

5. Drink less. One drink per day. No more. This will help with the ridiculous hangovers, such as the one I have now.

6. No more New Year's Eve parties in the city. Because of the hangover. Next year, staying home.

Why cucumbers?

I've never liked them, but being a vegetarian I find that they're present in many vegetarian dishes, so I feel I should give them another chance. I used to be a rather fussy eater so for the past several years I've tried to make it a resolution to pick a different thing I thought I didn't like and develop a taste for it. It's how I learned to like mushrooms. Who knows, next year I may drop the vegetarian thing and try your venison sausage.

How do you learn to like something you don't like? I mean, it's not a person, so it's not going to change or anything.

You eat it until you no longer have the urge to gag. It doesn't change, but your taste for it can. Acquired taste.

It sometimes helps to keep trying the offending food in different incarnations until you find one that you can stand, then build from there.

I found it much the same back when I was practicing veganism, but I never thought that they had much of a flavor to dislike. Ubiquitous, but unoffensive; pretty much filler in most dishes.

Is it just the raw vegetable that is unappealing, or do pickles and the like fall under the same banner?

Yeah, I was wondering, what's with the not liking cucumbers? Sure, no one has to like them, but actually not liking the taste?

And dude... you went from being a vegan to being all excited about grinding up Bambi and Thumper?

The veganism was a matter of practicality rather than principle. I had a cat with a rare metabolic condition and a knack for weaseling into cabinets and refrigerators. Going vegan was less distasteful than having to clean up cat vomit and making midnight visits to the emergency clinic.

Poor kitty. :(

So were you really a vegan all of the time or did you eat meat when you were out where your cat couldn't get at the food?

After the first time I came home with sirloin on my breath and nearly had a determined Siamese climb down my throat, I went made it a lifestyle.

I try not to shirk my responsibilities.

It's the taste or rather, lack of taste that is definitely a factor, as well as the texture. I have nothing against pickles.
